GREAT16 Conference

Within a short time of 13 work days, students were responsible to research on different technological education topics as well as putting together the conference as a team.

I took part of building the website for the event with Grace. Here is the GREAT 16 website:

At our conference, each student work with others to give presentations, create posters and infographics. I gave a presentation on the topic of "Strengthening Students' Problem Solving Skills Through Coding" with Kelcie Cain.

Here is an online resource we put together that gives you the essential information about our session.

In this graphic, you will find different videos that we found to help audiences understand more about coding and why it is essential to teach them through content starting at the young age. Also, we have put together different examples of how teachers can teach coding through content with different tools.

Reflection

Through this conference experience I have learned a lot of things. I learned...

  • About tools and resources available out there for young children to get exposed to coding through different apps and tools out there that are designed for younger programmers.

  • As teachers know that problem solving skills are important. Through the process of coding, programmers really have to overcome different problems to become successful.

  • Ways to teach coding through content.

  • How fun coding is by exploring different apps and tools.

  • To work with others to conduct research and put together a presentation in a short time.

  • Important elements in a good engaging presentation.

  • Learned about other topics my peers have researched and studied on.

This conference, starting from putting together the work to seeing the all the presentations, has enriched my knowledge and interest in technological education. A lot of peer work inspired me with teaching ideas, tools, strategies, and practices I can bring back into my own classroom. Now, after this conference, throughout the year, I will really need to set aside a time to revisit these resources and ideas to find a good way to present, share, and use in my school.

GREAT16 Conference

The Great 16, Global Resources in Education and Technology, is a conference that master's students in the technological education program at Michigan State University puts together during the summer studies in Galway, Ireland.
